About Us

We've combined our names "Mike and Kelly and created MiKel's Lavender Oasis.

We began our lavender farm journey in 2013 with 125 plants. With a lot of heart, dedication, and passion, we have planted 2700 plants in 2014.

With Mike's backround in press work and managing an electrical parts manufacturing company, and Kelly's backround in hairstyling, the obvious route was to start a lavender farm.

Why? you ask. Well, it actually started as Mike's dream. Being at a job that was un fullfilling to him and having a property with enough space to do something with, he was searching for what he would love to do and enjoy. Mike saw a show on television about lavender and met with other lavender farmers and thought ... this is what I want to do. Its so relaxing.

Kelly is also an integral part of the company, but as someone who loves her job, she wasn't in a rush for such a big life change yet.

Kelly helps with all the farm work and the making of the products, but its mainly Mike who you will see at most of the shows and farmers markets that MiKel's participates in.

And so it Began ...

In 2013 we dug up some ground, and had it tested so we knew we had good enough soil for growing lavender. Once it was determined that our soil was good, we sourced out our first plants. We purchased 125 plants. Mainly Hidcote and a few Grosso. Prepared the soil and we set out to get the seedlings in the ground. That proved its own challenges. The ground wasnt as easy to work with as we thought. We managed to get all the plants in the ground. We were very excited, and proud. Now to watch them grow.

That spring had been quite a wet one, and we fast learned that there was a low spot in our "tourist plot" (as we now call it). We learned a tough lesson, and lost about 25 of our plants. That wasn't going to deter us from starting this new venture. We moved some plants and salvaged what we could.

The rest of the season was great. UNTIL ... that dreaded winter of 2014. The ice was the biggest factor in the plant loss. We thought the snow covered plants would have fared better since the snow cover is supposed to be a great insulator. It is, but the insulation is also great for VOLES !! We came out of winter with only 33 plants.

Down, but not defeated...

We had prepared for spring of 2014 with a very large order of lavender plants, 2700 of them. All planted and watered and pruned by Mike and Kelly.

The biggest lesson we have learned in becoming lavender farmers is PATIENCE. We heard a great quote one time..... if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.
